St. Demetrios Religious Education

2025 - 2026

The Gospel according to St. Luke

This year in Sunday School we will be studying the Gospel according to St. Luke - the story of the life and ministry of Christ as set down for us by the Apostle and Evangelist St. Luke. As we go through the year, we will also be learning about iconography, specifically the icons of the major feasts which commemorate specific events from the Gospels (such as Annunciation, Nativity, and Transfiguration).

We encourage all of our families to participate in this and in the adult education each Thursday, but in particular we encourage our families to participate by following along at home. As we work through the Gospel according to St. Luke, please read through the weekly passages at home, discussing them and teaching them to your children. Sunday School can only do so much for teaching our children these life-giving stories from Scripture, given that we only meet for a few minutes every week. If we can expand that by reading, discussing, and learning about these stories and our faith at home, then we will all be enriched.

To that end, we will be adding a weekly email with the readings for the week and links to the "At Home" portion of the curriculum. There is a separate (if similar) "At Home" sheet each for Early Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle/High School. The resources (mostly images of icons) for each week's lesson are also included in these. We encourage all of our families to use and learn about these as you read and discuss the weekly portions of the Gospel of St. Luke, so that the students already have some familiarity with the material before the weekly Sunday School meeting.

Each student in the Sunday School is provided with a Children's Bible Reader (for the Elementary levels) and an Orthodox Study Bible (for the Middle/High schoolers). If you don't have a Bible at home, please speak to Fr. Timothy.

The Sunday School classes meet every Sunday following Holy Communion in the Divine Liturgy. The School is divided into the following classes:

Preschool - 1st Grade (taught by Pres. Catherine, Taylor Blohm, & Jacqueline Sous)
2nd - 4th Grade (taught by Andrea Ferris & Elan Nichols)
Middle School (taught by Kim Gowenlock & Alexandra Sous)
High School (taught by Andy Bazakis, Evan Houpis & David Nichols)

Every Thursday night (Wednesday night in Lent), we'll start our discussion in the Church at the end of the service and then meet in the Hall after the service for a meal and fellowship. All are welcome!

If you can't join us in-person at the Church, we invite you to participate as best you can through the live-stream of the service and talk.Bring your questions and join us as we come together for prayer, fellowship, and to encounter Christ through the Holy Scriptures.
